The advantages of hiring a worker in the Philippines:
- Great English. The Philippines was an American-administered territory for 50 years. English is the primary language in the schools.
- Great work attitude. Filipinos are not scared of hard work, and they believe in loyalty and honesty.
- Low cost. An American can pay a Filipino very well and still keep it affordable.
The disadvantages:
- They’re working different hours.
- You cannot call them (you can through Skype, but you have to schedule that in advance)
- The Internet goes down sometimes in the Philippines
The bottom line:
From our experience outsourcing — and we have a lot of it — offshore hiring is best used for work that is not time sensitive and that doesn’t need to be perfect. Many people in the Philippines are extremely intelligent and capable, but the communication issues can cause problems with time sensitive work. We like to hire people here in Chicago for web development, and we hire Filipinos for tasks that don’t have hard deadlines, like data entry, writing and link building. You can get someone to do these types of tasks for about $3-$5/hr at EasyOutsource, and if they miss a day or make a few mistakes it’s not the end of the world.
If you hire someone from EasyOutsource, you should pay them either through Xoom or PayPal. Discuss with them which one is preferred. Pay them every 2 weeks or every month. And please don’t be a jerk – pay people for their work.
Find someone who speaks English well and is intelligent and reliable. Those are the primary skills needed for most jobs that are outsourced. Keep in mind that you will need to micro-manage this person to some extent. We recommend having them send you a daily email overviewing what they did so you can approve it.
How to get started:
Outsourcing is really not that hard, and we’re here to make it easy. Here’s what you should do.
- Define your job. What can you train another person to do? Here are some ideas.
- Login and post a job.
- Review applicants, and interview the ones you like using Skype or Google Talk.
- When you find someone you want to hire, agree to a trial task of 1-2 weeks. Make the task resemble your actual work and conditions, so you can see how well you work together. Agree on payment terms.
- Pay using Xoom or PayPal.
- Treat your assistant with respect and compensate appropriately. Your assistant will stay with you for a long time and will get better with age.
